Evidence supporting the use of: Bauhinia purpurea
For the body system: Thyroid Gland
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bauhinia purpurea, commonly known as the purple orchid tree, has a history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and folk medicine, particularly in India and Southeast Asia. In these systems, its bark and leaves are used to support thyroid health, especially in the case of hypothyroidism. The traditional rationale stems largely from the doctrine of signatures and empirical use rather than biochemical understanding. Some studies on related species, such as Bauhinia variegata, have shown potential thyroid-stimulating activity in animal models, but direct scientific evidence for Bauhinia purpurea itself is limited. A few experimental studies in rodents suggest that extracts might influence thyroid hormone levels, possibly by increasing the secretion of T3 and T4, but these findings are preliminary and not yet confirmed in human clinical trials. Overall, the use of Bauhinia purpurea for thyroid support is justified primarily by tradition, with only weak and indirect scientific backing. More rigorous studies, especially in humans, would be necessary to validate its efficacy and safety for thyroid health.
