Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oriental Ginseng, also known as Panax ginseng, has a longstanding history in traditional Chinese and Korean medicine, where it is used as an adaptogen to promote overall vitality and support various body systems, including the endocrine system. Its use for thyroid health is primarily based on traditional concepts of balancing the body's energy ("qi") rather than direct scientific evidence relating specifically to thyroid function. While Panax ginseng is thought to help the body cope with stress and fatigue—which can indirectly benefit individuals with thyroid imbalances—there is limited clinical research directly evaluating its impact on thyroid hormones such as T3, T4, or TSH in humans. Some animal studies suggest that ginsenosides, the active compounds in ginseng, may influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which is related to the body’s stress response and, indirectly, the thyroid. However, evidence in humans is sparse and inconclusive. Most scientific literature focuses on ginseng’s effects on energy, immune function, and cognitive performance, not on specific thyroid support. Therefore, while Panax ginseng is traditionally used as a general tonic that might support thyroid health via stress reduction and energy enhancement, robust scientific validation for its direct use in thyroid disorders is lacking.
