Evidence supporting the use of: Kachnar
For the body system: Thyroid Gland
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata) has a longstanding use in Ayurvedic medicine, particularly for supporting the thyroid gland and managing conditions such as goiter (referred to as "Galaganda" in Ayurveda). The traditional use is based on historical texts and centuries of empirical use rather than robust modern scientific validation. Kachnar is believed in Ayurveda to help regulate thyroid function, balance "Kapha" dosha, and support healthy glandular function. Some phytochemical studies have identified bioactive compounds in Kachnar such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins, but direct clinical evidence in humans for efficacy in thyroid disorders is limited. A few animal studies have suggested possible antithyroid activity, but these findings are preliminary and not yet substantiated in large-scale human trials. As of now, no high-quality clinical studies have confirmed its effectiveness or safety for thyroid health. Therefore, while Kachnar's use for thyroid support is justified mainly by tradition, the scientific evidence remains insufficient. Caution is advised, and individuals should consult healthcare professionals before using Kachnar for thyroid-related issues.
