Selenious acid is an inorganic form of selenium, a trace mineral essential for human health. Selenium, in its various forms, is scientifically validated as important for thyroid gland function. The thyroid gland requires selenium-containing enzymes, known as selenoproteins, such as glutathione peroxidases and iodothyronine deiodinases. These enzymes are crucial for the activation and deactivation of thyroid hormones and for protecting the thyroid gland from oxidative damage caused by hydrogen peroxide generated during hormone synthesis.

Clinical evidence shows that selenium supplementation (in forms such as selenious acid, selenomethionine, or sodium selenite) can improve certain thyroid conditions, particularly autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) and mild Graves’ disease, by reducing thyroid peroxidase antibody levels and possibly improving thyroid hormone metabolism. However, most studies use organic selenium forms (like selenomethionine), and fewer clinical trials have specifically used selenious acid. Nonetheless, selenious acid is a bioavailable source of selenium and can contribute to overall selenium status.

While selenium deficiency is linked to impaired thyroid function and increased risk of thyroid disease, excessive selenium intake can be harmful. Therefore, selenium supplementation—including via selenious acid—should be used judiciously and guided by clinical assessment. In summary, there is solid scientific rationale for selenium’s importance in thyroid health, but the direct evidence for selenious acid’s superiority or unique role is limited compared to other selenium forms.
