For the body system: Thyroid Gland
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Selenomethionine is a well-absorbed organic form of selenium, an essential trace mineral with a key role in thyroid health. Selenium is required for the activity of several selenoproteins, including the enzyme iodothyronine deiodinase, which catalyzes the conversion of thyroxine (T4) to the more active triiodothyronine (T3) hormone. Adequate selenium status is thus crucial for proper thyroid hormone synthesis and metabolism. Multiple clinical studies have found associations between low selenium levels and increased risk of thyroid disorders, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease. Supplementation with selenium (often as selenomethionine) has been shown in several randomized controlled trials to reduce thyroid peroxidase antibody levels in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis, suggesting a potential benefit in reducing thyroid-specific autoimmunity and improving thyroid function. However, the clinical impact on thyroid hormone levels and symptoms is modest, and not all studies have shown benefits. Current scientific consensus supports selenium supplementation primarily in selenium-deficient individuals or those with evidence of autoimmune thyroid disease, rather than for generalized thyroid support in the healthy population. Overall, the use of selenomethionine for thyroid support is justified by a solid scientific rationale and moderate clinical evidence, though the benefits may be context-dependent.
