Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginkgoflavones are flavonoid compounds found in Ginkgo biloba extracts. The use of Ginkgo biloba (and by extension, ginkgoflavones) for tinnitus is primarily rooted in traditional medicine, particularly within European and Asian herbal practices. Historically, Ginkgo biloba has been used to improve blood circulation and treat various cognitive and vascular conditions. Its application for tinnitus stems from the belief that improved microcirculation in the inner ear and antioxidant effects might alleviate the perception of ringing or noise. Scientific research on Ginkgo biloba for tinnitus has yielded mixed results. Some clinical trials have suggested mild benefit, particularly in cases of recent-onset tinnitus, while others have found no significant difference compared to placebo. A 2022 Cochrane review concluded there is insufficient high-quality evidence to support the use of Ginkgo biloba for tinnitus relief. Isolated ginkgoflavones themselves have not been specifically studied for tinnitus. Current guidelines do not recommend Ginkgo biloba or ginkgoflavones as a standard treatment for tinnitus due to inconsistent efficacy and lack of robust clinical data. However, the traditional use persists, largely based on anecdotal reports and historical precedent rather than rigorous scientific validation.
