Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Ginseng has been traditionally used in various systems of herbal medicine, particularly in East Asian practices, for its reputed general health benefits, including improving vitality, cognitive function, and circulation. However, its use specifically for tinnitus is based more on anecdotal and traditional use than on robust scientific evidence. Historical herbal texts and folk medicine occasionally mention ginseng as a remedy for ear disorders, which may include tinnitus, but these references are not consistent or specific. There are very few clinical studies examining the effects of ginseng on tinnitus, and those that exist are either of low quality or inconclusive. Most of the rationale for its use is extrapolated from the herb’s general effects on circulation and neurological function, under the theory that improving blood flow or reducing oxidative stress could benefit tinnitus sufferers. However, these hypotheses have not been definitively tested or confirmed in well-designed human trials. Therefore, while ginseng may be used traditionally for tinnitus in some cultures, there is minimal direct scientific evidence to support its effectiveness for this specific condition.
