Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Gelsemium, a plant genus including Gelsemium sempervirens, has a history of use in traditional herbal and homeopathic medicine for a variety of nervous system complaints, including tremors. Its use for tremors primarily comes from 19th- and early 20th-century herbal and homeopathic literature, where it was recommended for symptoms such as muscle weakness, trembling, and anxiety-related tremors. In homeopathy, Gelsemium is often indicated for tremors associated with anticipation or nervousness, based on the principle of "like cures like." However, the traditional use was not based on controlled scientific studies but rather on empirical observation and symptom matching. From a scientific standpoint, there is minimal modern clinical research evaluating the efficacy of Gelsemium in treating tremors. A small number of preclinical studies have investigated its neuroactive properties, but these do not provide robust evidence for its use in human tremor conditions such as essential tremor or Parkinsonian tremor. The safety profile of Gelsemium is also a concern, as the plant contains toxic alkaloids and can be poisonous in non-homeopathic doses. Therefore, while Gelsemium has traditional and homeopathic uses for tremors, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak, and it is not recognized as a standard treatment in contemporary medicine.
