For the health condition: Tremors
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) has a long history of use in Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine for a variety of neurological and psychiatric conditions, including tremors. Ancient Ayurvedic texts describe its calming effects on the nervous system, and it is often included in formulations aimed at treating disorders characterized by involuntary movements, such as tremors associated with Parkinsonism or essential tremor. The root is believed to have "vata-pacifying" properties, which is relevant because tremors are considered a manifestation of aggravated vata dosha in Ayurveda.
From a scientific standpoint, there are a few preclinical studies indicating that extracts of Jatamansi may possess neuroprotective, antioxidant, and anxiolytic effects. Some animal studies have demonstrated a reduction in chemically-induced tremors or motor dysfunction after administration of Jatamansi extracts. For example, rodent models have shown improvements in motor coordination and reductions in oxidative stress markers after Jatamansi treatment. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating its efficacy for tremors are lacking. Thus, while traditional use is strong and there is some preliminary scientific rationale, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is limited, justifying a moderate rating.
