Akkermansia muciniphila is a gut bacterium that has garnered significant interest due to its association with metabolic health, including lipid metabolism. There is emerging scientific evidence from preclinical studies (especially in mice), and a few early human trials, suggesting that supplementation with A. muciniphila may have beneficial effects on triglyceride levels. In animal studies, administration of A. muciniphila has been shown to decrease serum triglycerides, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce fat mass in models of obesity and metabolic syndrome. The presumed mechanisms include modulation of gut barrier function, reduction of systemic inflammation, and influence on host lipid metabolism pathways.

A 2019 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study in overweight and obese humans (Depommier et al., Nature Medicine) found that pasteurized A. muciniphila supplementation was safe and resulted in modest improvements in several metabolic parameters, including a trend toward lower triglycerides, although the change did not reach statistical significance compared to placebo. Larger and longer-term human studies are still needed to establish efficacy for specifically lowering triglycerides.
