Anchovies are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which have been extensively studied for their beneficial effects on blood lipid profiles, including the reduction of elevated triglyceride levels. Numerous clinical trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that omega-3 supplementation, typically in the form of fish oil, significantly lowers triglyceride concentrations in individuals with hypertriglyceridemia. The American Heart Association and other major health organizations recommend the consumption of oily fish, such as anchovies, as part of a heart-healthy diet to manage triglycerides and reduce cardiovascular risk.
The mechanism involves omega-3 fatty acids decreasing hepatic VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein) synthesis, which is a major carrier of triglycerides in the blood. While most clinical studies use concentrated fish oil supplements, consuming whole oily fish like anchovies provides similar omega-3 fatty acids, albeit in lower doses. Anchovies, being small and low on the food chain, also contain less mercury and other contaminants, making them a safer choice for regular consumption.
