Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Argan nut oil, derived from the kernels of the Argan tree (Argania spinosa), has some scientific evidence supporting its potential to help lower high triglyceride levels. Several small clinical studies and animal experiments have investigated the effect of argan oil on lipid profiles. These studies suggest that argan oil consumption may lead to a reduction in serum triglyceride concentrations, likely due to its rich content of unsaturated fatty acids (primarily oleic and linoleic acids), tocopherols (vitamin E), and plant sterols. For example, a 2004 study published in the journal Metabolism found that Moroccan men who consumed argan oil daily for three weeks showed significant reductions in serum triglycerides compared to those consuming butter. Other small human studies have replicated these findings, but the overall body of evidence remains limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and lack of large-scale randomized controlled trials.

While the mechanism is not fully understood, the improvement in lipid profiles is thought to be related to the oil's high unsaturated fat content and antioxidant properties, similar to the effects seen with other plant-derived oils such as olive oil. However, due to the relatively modest and preliminary nature of the available research, current evidence rates as low to moderate (2 out of 5). More robust clinical trials are needed to firmly establish argan oil's effectiveness in lowering high triglycerides.
