Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) leaf extract has garnered scientific interest for its potential lipid-lowering effects, particularly in relation to elevated triglyceride levels. Several clinical studies and systematic reviews have examined its impact on blood lipids. The proposed mechanism involves compounds in artichoke such as cynarin and chlorogenic acid, which may enhance bile production and cholesterol excretion, as well as exhibit antioxidant effects that could influence lipid metabolism.

A 2018 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials published in Phytomedicine evaluated the efficacy of artichoke extract on lipid profiles. The analysis found a modest but statistically significant reduction in both total cholesterol and triglyceride levels among participants receiving artichoke extract compared to placebo. However, the magnitude of triglyceride lowering was generally small and may not be clinically meaningful for all patients.

While artichoke has a long history of use in traditional medicine for digestive and liver complaints, its use specifically for hypertriglyceridemia is based primarily on modern research findings rather than ancient tradition. The overall quality of evidence is moderate, with some methodological limitations noted in the studies (e.g., small sample sizes, short durations). As such, artichoke extract may offer an adjunctive benefit for individuals with mildly elevated triglycerides, but it should not replace conventional therapies in cases of significantly high levels or in those at high cardiovascular risk.
