Black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) has been investigated for its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. The proposed mechanisms involve the high content of polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins and flavonoids, which possess antioxidant properties and may improve lipid profiles by reducing oxidative stress and modulating enzyme activities involved in lipid metabolism.
For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the journal European Journal of Nutrition (2007) involving patients with metabolic syndrome found that supplementation with chokeberry extract for two months resulted in a significant reduction in triglyceride levels compared to baseline. Other studies in both humans and animals have reported similar findings, though not all results are consistent and most studies had small sample sizes and relatively short durations.
