Evidence supporting the use of: Black currant
For the health condition: Triglycerides (high)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Black currant (Ribes nigrum) is sometimes used as a dietary supplement to support healthy lipid profiles, including triglyceride levels. The justification for its use in this context is primarily scientific, though the body of evidence is still emerging and not robust. Black currant is rich in anthocyanins and polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which have been hypothesized to exert lipid-lowering effects. Several small-scale clinical studies and preclinical research have investigated black currant seed oil and extracts in relation to lipid metabolism. Some studies suggest that supplementation may modestly reduce triglyceride levels, possibly due to anti-inflammatory effects and improvements in lipid metabolism. For example, a 2015 randomized controlled trial found that black currant seed oil supplementation led to a small but statistically significant reduction in triglyceride levels in overweight or obese women. However, these findings are not universally consistent, and larger, better-controlled studies are needed. Current evidence rates at about 2 out of 5: there is plausible mechanistic support and some positive clinical data, but the totality of evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short intervention periods, and sometimes conflicting results. Black currant is not a first-line treatment for high triglycerides, but may be considered as a complementary approach under healthcare supervision.
