Buglossoides arvensis, also known as Ahiflower, is a plant whose seeds are rich in the omega-3 fatty acid stearidonic acid (SDA). There is emerging scientific evidence that oil derived from Buglossoides arvensis seeds can have a beneficial effect on blood lipid profiles, including triglyceride levels. Several randomized, double-blind clinical trials have demonstrated that supplementation with Ahiflower oil increases circulating levels of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), an omega-3 fatty acid known to help reduce triglycerides, more efficiently than supplementation with alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) from flaxseed oil. For example, a 2016 study in Nutrition found that Ahiflower oil supplementation significantly increased EPA concentrations and favorably affected lipid metabolism markers in healthy adults.

However, the evidence specifically targeting elevated triglycerides is still limited and not as robust as that for traditional fish oil supplements. Most studies to date are small and focus on healthy or mildly hyperlipidemic populations, with triglyceride reduction as a secondary outcome. Nevertheless, the mechanism—conversion of SDA to EPA and subsequent impact on triglycerides—is biologically plausible and has been partially validated in human studies.

In summary, there is moderate scientific evidence (rating: 3/5) supporting the use of Buglossoides arvensis oil to help manage triglyceride levels, but more large-scale, targeted trials are needed to confirm efficacy in hypertriglyceridemic individuals.
