Calanus finmarchicus oil is a marine oil derived from a copepod species in the North Atlantic. Its primary bioactive components are long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (notably EPA and DHA), though in lower concentrations than found in traditional fish oils. The unique aspect of Calanus oil is that much of its omega-3s are present as wax esters rather than triglycerides or phospholipids.
There is preliminary scientific evidence suggesting that Calanus oil may help reduce triglyceride levels. A small number of animal studies and limited human trials have observed favorable changes in blood lipid profiles, including decreased triglycerides, after supplementation. For instance, a 2016 clinical trial in overweight and obese women reported a modest reduction in triglycerides after 12 weeks of Calanus oil supplementation compared to placebo. However, the magnitude of effect was less robust than what is seen with higher-dose fish oil (EPA/DHA) supplements.
Overall, while the mechanism—omega-3 fatty acids lowering triglycerides—is well-established, the specific evidence for Calanus oil is still emerging and currently limited. The unique wax ester form may affect absorption and efficacy, and more research is needed to clarify its impact relative to standard marine oils. For these reasons, scientific support is present but currently weak (rating: 2/5), and Calanus oil is not yet widely recognized as a primary option for triglyceride lowering.
