Canola oil is supported by scientific evidence as a dietary intervention for managing high triglyceride levels. Several clinical studies have investigated the effects of canola oil, which is low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fats, on blood lipid profiles, including triglycerides. Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats like those found in canola oil is a core recommendation in dietary guidelines for cardiovascular health, including the management of elevated triglycerides. A meta-analysis published in the Journal of Lipid Research (2013) found that monounsaturated-rich oils such as canola oil can modestly reduce triglyceride concentrations when used as a substitute for saturated fat in the diet.
Moreover, canola oil contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid, which has been associated with triglyceride-lowering effects, although less pronounced than those seen with marine omega-3s. The American Heart Association and similar organizations recommend replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fats, such as those present in canola oil, to help lower blood triglyceride levels and reduce cardiovascular risk.
However, the magnitude of triglyceride reduction with canola oil alone is generally modest (typically in the range of 5-10%). The strongest effects are seen when canola oil is part of an overall heart-healthy diet that also includes other lifestyle modifications. Thus, while canola oil has a scientifically validated but moderate benefit for reducing high triglycerides, it is best used as part of an integrated dietary approach.
