Catechins, a type of polyphenol found abundantly in green tea, have been investigated for their potential to support healthy triglyceride levels. Several clinical and preclinical studies suggest that catechins, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), may help lower serum triglycerides. The proposed mechanisms include enhanced fatty acid oxidation, reduced absorption of dietary fats, and modulation of enzymes involved in lipid metabolism.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have yielded mixed but generally favorable results. A 2011 meta-analysis of 14 RCTs published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that green tea catechin supplementation led to a modest but significant reduction in blood triglyceride levels, especially when combined with caffeine. Animal studies also corroborate these findings, showing reduced hepatic triglyceride synthesis and improved lipid profiles with catechin administration.

However, not all studies show benefit, and effects tend to be modest. Results may vary depending on dosage, duration, and whether catechins are consumed as part of a whole food (like green tea) or as isolated extracts. Overall, while catechins are not a primary treatment for hypertriglyceridemia, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting their adjunctive use in managing triglycerides, particularly as part of a healthy lifestyle and diet.
