Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Middle Eastern medicine, for supporting cardiovascular health, including the management of high triglycerides. Traditional practitioners have used coriander seeds and extracts as part of dietary and herbal interventions aimed at lowering lipid levels in the blood. The rationale is often based on coriander’s purported ability to improve digestion, reduce "heat," and support metabolic function, which are sometimes linked to lipid metabolism in traditional frameworks.
Scientific evidence for coriander’s effect on triglyceride levels is limited but emerging. Some small animal studies suggest that coriander seed extracts may reduce serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels, possibly through mechanisms such as increased bile acid secretion or improved lipid metabolism. However, well-designed human clinical trials are sparse. The available human data are mostly from small studies or as part of multi-herb formulations, making it difficult to attribute any observed effects specifically to coriander. Systematic reviews of medicinal plants for dyslipidemia tend to mention coriander only briefly, reflecting the limited scope and quality of evidence. Overall, while coriander has traditional backing for this use, robust scientific validation is lacking, and its efficacy for high triglycerides remains to be conclusively demonstrated.
