Corosolic acid, a triterpenoid compound found in Lagerstroemia speciosa (banaba) leaves, has been studied mainly for its potential antidiabetic effects, but there is some emerging scientific interest in its impact on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. Animal studies and limited human clinical trials suggest that corosolic acid may help reduce elevated triglycerides, likely by enhancing insulin sensitivity and modulating lipid metabolic pathways. For instance, some preclinical studies demonstrate that corosolic acid can decrease serum triglyceride levels in rodents fed a high-fat diet, possibly through the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which influences lipid synthesis and oxidation.

However, the evidence in humans is sparse. A handful of small-scale clinical trials using banaba extracts (containing corosolic acid) have reported modest reductions in triglyceride levels, but these results are often confounded by simultaneous improvements in glucose control and are not always statistically significant. No large, high-quality randomized controlled trials have specifically evaluated corosolic acid as a treatment for hypertriglyceridemia. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence, it remains limited and inconclusive. Corosolic acid cannot yet be considered a well-validated treatment for high triglycerides, and further research is needed to establish its efficacy and optimal dosing in this context.
