Emblicanin is a class of polyphenolic compounds derived from the fruit of Phyllanthus emblica (also known as Indian gooseberry or amla). Several scientific studies have investigated the lipid-lowering effects of amla extracts, which are rich in emblicanin A and B. Clinical trials and preclinical studies indicate that supplementation with amla/emblicanin can significantly reduce serum triglyceride levels in individuals with dyslipidemia.
For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food (2013) found that administration of amla extract to hyperlipidemic subjects for 12 weeks led to significant reductions in triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol compared to placebo. Similar findings have been reported in other human and animal studies, where amla supplementation decreased triglycerides and improved overall lipid profiles.
The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant activity, inhibition of hepatic cholesterol synthesis, and modulation of lipid metabolism enzymes. While most studies use whole amla extracts rather than isolated emblicanin, emblicanin is considered the major active component responsible for these effects.
However, more large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are needed to further establish emblicanin’s efficacy as a triglyceride-lowering agent and to determine the optimal dosing and formulation. Current evidence supports a moderate scientific basis for its use in managing high triglycerides, leading to a rating of 3 on the evidence scale.
