Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a major catechin found in green tea, and its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels, have been investigated in both animal and human studies. The scientific evidence supporting the use of EGCG for lowering high triglycerides is limited but suggestive. Several small randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses indicate that green tea extracts containing EGCG may modestly reduce serum triglyceride levels, particularly in overweight or obese individuals. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of lipid absorption in the intestine, enhancement of lipid oxidation, and modulation of enzymes involved in lipid metabolism. For example, a 2011 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that green tea catechins led to a statistically significant, but clinically modest, reduction in triglycerides compared to placebo. However, the effect size is generally small and not always consistent across studies, and most research involves green tea extracts rather than purified EGCG. Furthermore, larger and longer-term studies are needed to confirm these effects and establish optimal dosing. Therefore, while there is some scientific evidence suggesting a benefit, it is moderate at best, and EGCG is not considered a primary therapy for high triglycerides.
