Flammulina velutipes, commonly known as enoki mushroom, has limited but emerging scientific evidence supporting its potential in managing high triglyceride levels. Several animal studies have shown that extracts from F. velutipes can reduce serum triglyceride levels. The proposed mechanisms include the presence of polysaccharides, dietary fiber, and specific bioactive compounds such as enokipodins, which may improve lipid metabolism, decrease absorption of dietary fat, and promote antioxidant activity. For example, research published in BioMed Research International (2014) demonstrated that mice fed a high-fat diet supplemented with F. velutipes extract showed significantly lower plasma triglyceride concentrations than controls. Another study in Food & Function (2016) pointed to the mushroom's fiber content as a factor in reducing lipid absorption. However, robust human clinical trials are lacking. The majority of available evidence comes from preclinical studies (mainly in rodents), with only a few small-scale human trials reporting mild lipid-lowering effects. Traditional or historical use of F. velutipes specifically for hypertriglyceridemia is not well documented, as its primary traditional role has been culinary rather than medicinal. Thus, while there is some scientific basis for its use in triglyceride management, the overall evidence is preliminary, warranting a low-to-moderate rating.
