Flavanols, a subclass of flavonoids found in foods such as cocoa, tea, apples, and certain berries, have been investigated for their potential effects on lipid profiles, including triglyceride levels. Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have examined the impact of flavanol-rich foods (notably cocoa and dark chocolate) on cardiovascular risk markers. The majority of this research has focused on blood pressure, endothelial function, and cholesterol levels, with a smaller subset assessing effects on triglycerides.
A 2017 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (Am J Clin Nutr, 2017) found that cocoa flavanol consumption had little to no significant effect on triglyceride levels in healthy individuals and those at cardiovascular risk. Other systematic reviews, such as a 2012 review in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, similarly reported minimal or inconsistent reductions in triglycerides with flavanol supplementation. The evidence is more consistent for improvements in LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol than for triglycerides.
Overall, while flavanols are associated with cardiovascular benefits, their direct effect on high triglycerides is limited and not strongly supported by current scientific evidence. Therefore, their use for treating or supporting high triglycerides can only be justified by modest and inconsistent scientific findings, and they are not a primary treatment for elevated triglycerides.
