Fucoxanthin is a carotenoid found in brown seaweeds and has attracted scientific interest for its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. Several preclinical studies in animal models have shown that fucoxanthin supplementation can reduce plasma triglyceride concentrations, likely through mechanisms involving increased expression of genes associated with lipid oxidation and reduced lipogenesis in the liver. These effects are thought to be partly mediated by fucoxanthin's ability to activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and upregulate uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), which promote energy expenditure and fat metabolism.
Some small human clinical trials have also explored fucoxanthin's effects. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Abidov et al., 2010) in obese women found that a supplement containing fucoxanthin led to a modest reduction in serum triglyceride levels compared to placebo. However, these studies often involved multi-ingredient formulations, short durations, and small sample sizes, which makes it difficult to attribute the effects solely to fucoxanthin or to generalize the findings. Further, the magnitude of triglyceride reduction has generally been modest.
In summary, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence from both animal and limited human studies suggesting that fucoxanthin may help lower triglyceride levels, the evidence is not robust or conclusive. Larger, high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and determine its clinical relevance for managing high triglycerides.
