Ginsenosides are the primary active components of ginseng (Panax ginseng), a herb widely used in traditional medicine. Recent scientific research has begun to explore the effects of ginsenosides on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. Several preclinical studies using animal models have shown that certain ginsenosides (such as Rb1, Rg1, and Rg3) may help to lower serum triglyceride levels by modulating lipid metabolism pathways, improving insulin sensitivity, and exerting anti-inflammatory effects. For example, a study published in Phytotherapy Research (2017) demonstrated that ginsenoside Rb1 reduced triglyceride accumulation in mice fed a high-fat diet. Small-scale human clinical studies have also investigated the effects of ginseng extracts (which contain ginsenosides) and reported modest reductions in triglyceride levels among participants with metabolic syndrome or hyperlipidemia. However, results are not always consistent, and many studies use ginseng extracts rather than isolated ginsenosides, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to ginsenosides. Additionally, clinical trials tend to be small, short-term, and sometimes lack rigorous controls. Overall, while there is a growing body of scientific evidence suggesting that ginsenosides may have a beneficial effect on triglyceride levels, the current quality and quantity of clinical evidence is limited, and more robust, large-scale human studies are needed to confirm efficacy and determine optimal dosing.
