Goji berry (Lycium barbarum) has been studied for its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. Several animal studies and a limited number of small human trials suggest that goji berries may modestly reduce triglyceride levels. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant activity, modulation of lipid metabolism enzymes, and improvement of insulin sensitivity, all of which can indirectly influence triglyceride concentrations. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2015 (Amagase et al.) found that supplementation with goji berry juice resulted in a modest reduction in triglycerides in healthy adults over a 30-day period. Animal studies have shown more pronounced effects, with reductions in triglyceride levels observed in rodents fed high-fat diets supplemented with goji berry extracts.

However, the clinical evidence remains limited, with few well-designed human studies and small sample sizes. Most available research points to a mild effect rather than a substantial therapeutic benefit. Goji berries have a long history of traditional use in Chinese medicine for general health and longevity, but their specific use for hypertriglyceridemia is not strongly rooted in traditional practices. Thus, while there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of goji berry for reducing triglyceride levels, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is modest, warranting a rating of 2 out of 5.
