Kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) have some scientific support for their role in managing high triglycerides, though the evidence is modest. Several studies have explored the effects of legumes, including kidney beans, on blood lipid profiles. The primary mechanisms thought to underlie these benefits include their high fiber content—especially soluble fiber—which can reduce intestinal absorption of fat and cholesterol, and their low glycemic index, which helps regulate blood sugar and insulin levels, both of which influence triglyceride metabolism.

A number of clinical trials and meta-analyses have found that regular consumption of beans and other legumes is associated with reduced total and LDL cholesterol, and, in some cases, lowered triglyceride levels. For example, a 2014 meta-analysis in the journal Canadian Medical Association Journal reported that eating about one serving (130g) of legumes per day can reduce LDL cholesterol. While the effect on triglycerides is generally less pronounced than on cholesterol, some studies do report modest reductions in triglyceride levels in participants consuming beans regularly.

However, most of the available evidence is from studies on legumes in general, not kidney beans specifically, and the impact on triglycerides is typically small to moderate. Kidney beans are not a substitute for medical therapy but can be considered a useful part of a heart-healthy diet. More targeted research is needed to clarify their specific effects on triglycerides.
