Konjac (Amorphophallus konjac), particularly its fiber known as glucomannan, has been studied for its effects on blood lipid profiles, including triglycerides. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses suggest that glucomannan supplementation can lead to modest reductions in triglyceride levels, as well as total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. The mechanism is believed to be related to the high soluble fiber content of konjac, which can decrease fat absorption in the gut and improve lipid metabolism. For example, a meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2008) found that glucomannan supplementation significantly reduced triglycerides in adults. Similarly, guidelines from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recognize that glucomannan contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels.
However, the effect size is generally small to moderate, and results may vary depending on dose, duration, and baseline lipid levels. Most studies used doses of around 3-4 grams per day. Konjac is considered safe for most people when used as directed, but can cause gastrointestinal effects such as bloating or gas. Overall, scientific evidence supports the use of konjac (glucomannan) as an adjunct to diet and lifestyle modifications for people with elevated triglycerides, but it should not be considered a substitute for medical treatment when needed.
