Krill oil is used to help manage high triglycerides, and this use is primarily supported by scientific evidence, though the strength of evidence is moderate. Krill oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, chiefly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), similar to fish oil. Several clinical studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can lower triglyceride levels, and prescription omega-3 products are approved for this purpose. However, the evidence for krill oil specifically is less robust than for fish oil, though it is growing. Some randomized controlled trials suggest that krill oil can significantly reduce triglyceride levels, possibly due to its phospholipid form, which may enhance absorption compared to traditional fish oil. For example, a 2014 study published in "Lipids in Health and Disease" found that krill oil supplementation led to a significant reduction in triglycerides in subjects with borderline or high levels. However, not all studies show a strong effect, and the magnitude of triglyceride reduction with krill oil appears to be somewhat less than high-dose prescription fish oils. Overall, krill oil is considered a reasonable option for supporting healthy triglyceride levels, with a moderate level of scientific support, but it should not replace prescription therapies for those with very high triglycerides or established cardiovascular disease.
