Myricetin is a flavonoid found in various fruits, vegetables, and teas, and it has been investigated for its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. Some preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) suggest that myricetin may help lower triglycerides by modulating lipid pathways, enhancing lipid oxidation, and reducing hepatic lipid accumulation. For example, research in rodents has shown that myricetin supplementation can decrease plasma triglyceride levels and improve overall lipid profiles, possibly through activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and inhibition of lipogenesis-related enzymes.
However, the evidence in humans is extremely limited. To date, there are few, if any, robust clinical trials directly evaluating the effects of isolated myricetin supplementation on triglyceride levels in humans. Most available data comes from studies using whole foods rich in myricetin or extracts containing multiple polyphenols, making it difficult to attribute the effects specifically to myricetin. Additionally, the doses used in animal studies are often much higher than what is typically achievable through dietary intake or supplementation in humans.
In summary, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence from laboratory and animal research suggesting a triglyceride-lowering effect of myricetin, clinical validation in humans is lacking. Therefore, the evidence supporting the use of myricetin for high triglycerides is weak (rated 2/5), and more research, particularly human trials, is needed to establish its efficacy and safety for this purpose.
