Polydextrose is a synthetic polymer of glucose commonly used as a soluble fiber and low-calorie bulking agent in foods. Some scientific studies have investigated its potential to improve lipid profiles, including lowering triglyceride levels. The proposed mechanism is that as a soluble fiber, polydextrose may modulate lipid metabolism by increasing short-chain fatty acid production via fermentation in the gut, which may in turn influence hepatic lipid synthesis and clearance. Several small human studies suggest that polydextrose supplementation can modestly reduce postprandial triglyceride response, especially when replacing digestible carbohydrates. For example, a few randomized controlled trials have found that polydextrose-enriched meals resulted in lower post-meal triglyceride excursions compared to control meals. However, the magnitude of the effect is generally small, and results are not always consistent. The overall evidence base is limited in both size and duration, with most studies being short-term and involving healthy or mildly hyperlipidemic subjects. Major clinical guidelines do not currently recommend polydextrose as a primary intervention for hypertriglyceridemia. In summary, there is some scientific evidence supporting a minor triglyceride-lowering effect from polydextrose, but the effect is modest and not yet robustly validated. Thus, while use is supported by emerging scientific findings, the strength of the evidence is currently low to moderate.
