Red seaweed, particularly species such as Gracilaria and Porphyra, contains a variety of bioactive compounds, including soluble dietary fibers (notably carrageenans), polyphenols, and omega-3 fatty acids. Several animal studies and small-scale human trials have investigated the potential lipid-lowering effects of red seaweed. The principal mechanism appears to be the modulation of lipid metabolism via soluble fiber, which may reduce intestinal absorption of dietary fat and cholesterol, as well as influence hepatic lipid synthesis. For example, a 2012 randomized controlled trial in humans found that supplementation with Gracilaria seaweed reduced serum triglyceride levels modestly in hyperlipidemic subjects. Other studies in rodents have confirmed reductions in triglyceride and cholesterol levels with red seaweed supplementation.

However, the body of clinical evidence remains limited, with few large or long-term human trials. Most studies use specific extracts or species, and results may not be generalizable to all "red seaweed" products. The effect size also tends to be modest. Regulatory agencies do not currently recognize red seaweed as a proven treatment for hypertriglyceridemia. Thus, while there is preliminary scientific support for the potential triglyceride-lowering effects of red seaweed, the overall quality and quantity of evidence justifies a moderate (2/5) rating.
