Evidence supporting the use of: Resveratrol
For the health condition: Triglycerides (high)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Resveratrol, a polyphenolic compound found in grapes, berries, and red wine, has been studied for its potential effects on cardiovascular health, including its impact on triglyceride levels. Several animal and human studies have investigated whether resveratrol supplementation can help reduce high triglycerides. The mechanism is thought to involve activation of SIRT1 and AMPK pathways, leading to improved lipid metabolism and decreased synthesis of triglycerides in the liver.
However, the clinical evidence in humans is limited and somewhat inconsistent. Some small randomized controlled trials have shown modest reductions in triglyceride levels with resveratrol supplementation, particularly at higher doses (e.g., 250 mg or more daily), while other studies have found no significant effect. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggest that although there may be a trend toward triglyceride reduction, the overall effect is mild and not consistently statistically significant. The populations studied are often small and heterogeneous, with variations in baseline lipid levels, dosing regimens, and study durations.
In summary, while there is some scientific interest and preliminary evidence supporting the use of resveratrol for high triglycerides, the quality and quantity of data are not strong enough to justify its widespread use for this purpose. More large-scale, well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm any meaningful benefit. Thus, the evidence supporting resveratrol’s use for treating high triglycerides rates as low to moderate.
