Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is a South African herbal tea traditionally consumed for its purported health benefits. Scientific interest in Rooibos has grown due to its high content of polyphenols, such as aspalathin and nothofagin, which possess antioxidant properties. Some research suggests that Rooibos may have beneficial effects on lipid profiles, including triglyceride levels. A notable human study published in 2011 (Marnewick et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology) observed that six weeks of daily Rooibos consumption led to significant reductions in serum triglyceride levels in adults at risk of cardiovascular disease. Proposed mechanisms include improved lipid metabolism and reduced oxidative stress. However, the evidence base is still limited: only a few small-scale human trials exist, and results are not entirely consistent. Most findings come from animal studies or in vitro experiments, which show potential triglyceride-lowering effects but may not translate directly to humans. In summary, while Rooibos is not traditionally used specifically for hypertriglyceridemia, emerging but limited clinical evidence suggests it may have a modest effect on triglyceride levels, warranting a low-to-moderate evidence rating. More robust, large-scale human studies are needed to confirm these effects and clarify their clinical significance.
