S-allylcysteine is a water-soluble compound derived from aged garlic (Allium sativum). Its potential lipid-lowering effects, including effects on triglycerides, have been investigated primarily in animal models and, to a lesser extent, in human studies. Some scientific evidence suggests that S-allylcysteine may help lower triglyceride levels, likely due to its antioxidant properties and ability to modulate lipid metabolism. For example, animal studies have demonstrated that S-allylcysteine supplementation can reduce serum triglycerides and other lipid parameters in models of hyperlipidemia. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of lipogenesis, enhancement of lipid oxidation, and improvement in overall antioxidant status, which collectively may contribute to healthier lipid profiles. However, the direct evidence in humans is limited. Most clinical studies examining garlic's effect on triglycerides use preparations containing a mix of garlic-derived compounds, making it difficult to isolate the impact of S-allylcysteine alone. Meta-analyses of garlic supplements suggest a modest triglyceride-lowering effect but do not specifically attribute this to S-allylcysteine. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and preclinical evidence supporting the use of S-allylcysteine for high triglycerides, high-quality human trials targeting S-allylcysteine specifically are lacking. The overall evidence base is limited, meriting a moderate-low rating.
