Sacha Inchi (Plukenetia volubilis), also known as the Inca peanut, is a seed native to the Amazon rainforest and has recently attracted scientific interest for its potential lipid-lowering effects, particularly on triglycerides. Several small clinical studies have examined the impact of Sacha Inchi oil supplementation on blood lipid profiles. The oil is notably rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid, as well as other polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are known from other sources (such as flaxseed and fish oil) to help reduce triglyceride levels.

A randomized, controlled trial published in 2014 in the journal Food & Function found that daily supplementation with Sacha Inchi oil (10-15 mL/day) over four months resulted in a significant reduction in triglyceride levels in adults with dyslipidemia. Similar results were observed in other small-scale studies, which report improvements in triglyceride and HDL cholesterol levels following Sacha Inchi oil consumption. The triglyceride-lowering effect is believed to stem from its high omega-3 content, which has been shown in broader nutritional research to reduce hepatic triglyceride synthesis and promote lipid clearance from the blood.

Despite these promising results, the clinical evidence remains limited due to small sample sizes, short study durations, and a lack of large-scale, long-term randomized controlled trials. While traditional use of Sacha Inchi in South America was primarily as a food source rather than a targeted remedy for lipid disorders, the current scientific evidence provides moderate support for its role in managing high triglycerides.
