Evidence supporting the use of: Schisandrins
For the health condition: Triglycerides (high)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Schisandrins, the active lignans from the fruit of Schisandra chinensis (also known as "five-flavor berry"), have a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting liver health, vitality, and stress adaptation. In TCM, Schisandra is not specifically prescribed for high triglycerides, but its role as a general liver tonic has led to traditional use for various metabolic and hepatic complaints, which may include lipid imbalances. Scientific studies directly investigating the effect of schisandrins on triglyceride levels in humans are limited. Some animal studies suggest that schisandrin and related compounds may improve lipid metabolism and reduce blood triglyceride levels, potentially through antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects. However, these findings are preliminary and largely preclinical. There are few, if any, robust human clinical trials validating Schisandra or its lignans as effective treatments for hypertriglyceridemia. Thus, while there is some traditional rationale for use in broader liver and metabolic health contexts, and some suggestive preclinical data, the overall evidence supporting schisandrins specifically for high triglycerides remains weak.
