Sesame (Sesamum indicum) seeds and their oil have been studied for their potential effects on lipid profiles, including triglyceride levels. The scientific evidence, while limited and mostly preliminary, suggests that sesame may have a modest triglyceride-lowering effect. Several animal studies and a few small human clinical trials have indicated that sesame lignans (notably sesamin) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) might contribute to improving lipid metabolism. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Nutrition Journal (2011) found that supplementation with sesame oil led to a significant decrease in serum triglyceride levels in patients with hypertension over a 60-day period. Other studies have posited mechanisms such as inhibition of fatty acid synthesis in the liver and upregulation of genes involved in fatty acid oxidation.
Traditional use of sesame in Ayurvedic and other herbal medicine systems has often focused on general cardiovascular health, but explicit historical usage for treating high triglycerides is less well documented. Scientific interest has grown in recent years, but the available clinical evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and variable study quality. As a result, while there is emerging scientific support for sesame’s triglyceride-lowering potential, the strength of evidence remains modest and further large-scale studies are needed to confirm efficacy and establish dosage guidelines.
