Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sesamolin is a lignan compound found in sesame seeds and sesame oil. Its potential to support or treat high triglycerides has been investigated in some scientific studies, primarily in animal models. Preclinical research has suggested that sesamolin and related sesame lignans may exert lipid-lowering effects by modulating lipid metabolism, possibly through the regulation of enzymes involved in fatty acid oxidation and synthesis. For example, studies in rats have shown that supplementation with sesame oil or sesamolin can lead to reductions in serum triglyceride levels, as well as improvements in other lipid parameters. The hypothesized mechanisms include antioxidant effects, improved hepatic fatty acid metabolism, and decreased synthesis of triglycerides in the liver.

However, evidence in humans is limited and not conclusive. While sesame oil and lignans are sometimes incorporated into traditional diets, there is insufficient high-quality clinical data to fully validate sesamolin’s use for lowering triglycerides in humans. Most human studies have focused on sesame oil or whole sesame seeds, rather than isolated sesamolin, and results have been mixed. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary animal data, the evidence supporting sesamolin’s use for treating high triglycerides in humans is currently weak and rated as 2 out of 5.
