Evidence supporting the use of: Stilbenoid
For the health condition: Triglycerides (high)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Stilbenoids are a group of natural phenolic compounds, with resveratrol being the most extensively studied member. Scientific interest in stilbenoids has focused on their potential cardiometabolic effects, including impacts on blood lipid profiles such as triglycerides. Several animal and human studies, particularly those involving resveratrol, suggest a possible triglyceride-lowering effect. Mechanistically, resveratrol has been shown to influence lipid metabolism pathways, reduce hepatic triglyceride synthesis, and improve insulin sensitivity, all of which could contribute to lower triglyceride levels.
However, the evidence in humans is limited and somewhat inconsistent. A number of small randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have indicated that resveratrol supplementation may reduce triglyceride levels modestly, but the effects are often not statistically significant or are observed only at higher doses. Furthermore, the majority of studies focus on resveratrol specifically rather than the broader class of stilbenoids, and the doses used in research frequently exceed those achievable through a typical diet.
In summary, there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of specific stilbenoids like resveratrol in lowering triglycerides, but the overall quality and consistency of the evidence is moderate at best. Other stilbenoids have not been sufficiently studied. Therefore, the use of "stilbenoid (unspecified)" for high triglycerides is only weakly supported by current scientific data.
