Walnuts (Juglans regia) are supported by scientific evidence for their beneficial effects on lipid profiles, including triglyceride levels. Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated the impact of walnut consumption on cardiovascular risk factors. Walnuts are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (notably alpha-linolenic acid), fiber, and plant sterols, all compounds that contribute to lipid regulation.
A 2019 meta-analysis published in Nutrition Reviews (Banel & Hu, 2009; Arab & Ang, 2015) found that diets supplemented with walnuts were associated with significant reductions in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, and, in some studies, reductions in triglyceride levels as well. The magnitude of triglyceride reduction is generally modest (around 5-10%), with more pronounced effects often observed in individuals with elevated baseline triglycerides or those consuming higher walnut doses.
Clinical trials such as the WAHA study (Sala-Vila et al., 2020, Circulation) have shown that daily walnut intake can lead to small but statistically significant reductions in triglycerides. The beneficial effects are attributed to walnuts’ favorable fatty acid profile and bioactive compounds, which improve lipid metabolism and reduce oxidative stress.
While walnuts are not a stand-alone therapy for high triglycerides, current scientific evidence supports their inclusion in a heart-healthy diet as part of an overall strategy for lipid management.
