Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are scientifically validated for their ability to lower elevated triglyceride levels, not to treat low triglyceride levels. In fact, low triglyceride levels (<50 mg/dL) are generally not considered a medical problem requiring intervention, and there is no evidence or rationale for using omega-3 fatty acids to increase already low triglycerides. Omega-3s are used therapeutically to reduce high triglycerides, which are a cardiovascular risk factor. Multiple large, randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have confirmed that prescription-strength omega-3 fatty acids can lower triglyceride levels by 20-50% in patients with hypertriglyceridemia. The American Heart Association and other major guidelines recommend their use for adults with persistently elevated triglycerides despite lifestyle changes.

For individuals with low triglycerides, omega-3 supplementation is not indicated, and there is no traditional or scientific basis for its use in this context. In summary, while omega-3 fatty acids are strongly evidence-based for lowering high triglycerides, there is neither scientific nor traditional support for using them to treat or support low triglyceride levels.
