Evidence supporting the use of: Astragaloside
For the health condition: Tuberculosis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Astragaloside, a major active component extracted from Astragalus membranaceus, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, Astragalus has been used for centuries as an immune booster and as an adjunctive treatment in chronic illnesses, including pulmonary conditions like tuberculosis (TB). However, the use of Astragaloside specifically for TB is justified mainly by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
Some traditional herbal formulations for “consumptive diseases” (an old term often referring to TB) included Astragalus as a core ingredient. The rationale was to “tonify Qi,” strengthen the body's defenses, and improve recovery during long-term illness. Modern preclinical research has shown that Astragaloside IV can modulate immune responses, enhance macrophage activity, and possess anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically be beneficial for TB, a disease characterized by host-pathogen immune interactions.
However, direct clinical evidence supporting the use of Astragaloside in TB treatment is very limited. Most studies are in vitro or in animal models and focus on general immune enhancement rather than specific anti-Mycobacterium tuberculosis activity. No large-scale clinical trials have validated its efficacy or safety as a TB therapy. Therefore, while traditional use and some preliminary biological plausibility exist, the evidence remains weak and largely historical.
