For the health condition: Tuberculosis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Belamcanda chinensis (also known as Iris domestica or "shegan" in traditional Chinese medicine) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in China. It is traditionally used for throat disorders, coughs, and respiratory conditions, including tuberculosis (TB). In classical Chinese medical texts, Belamcanda rhizome is mentioned as an ingredient in formulas intended to "clear heat and resolve phlegm," which are, in traditional theory, often associated with phthisis (a term historically used for tuberculosis). However, the rationale for its use is based on traditional concepts rather than modern biomedical understanding of TB.
There is minimal scientific evidence directly supporting the efficacy of Belamcanda for treating tuberculosis. Some in vitro studies suggest that extracts from Belamcanda may possess anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial activities, but these are not specific to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of TB, nor have they translated into clinical data. No controlled clinical trials have validated its use for TB treatment. Thus, the evidence supporting Belamcanda's use for tuberculosis is primarily traditional, and the scientific support is weak to nonexistent.
