Rating (out of 5): 2

Oldenlandia, particularly Oldenlandia diffusa (also referred to as Hedyotis diffusa), has a longstanding use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Chinese and Indian herbal medicine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Oldenlandia is known as "Bai Hua She She Cao" and has been used for its purported "heat-clearing" and detoxifying properties, which are thought to be beneficial in conditions characterized by chronic inflammation, such as tuberculosis (TB). In some ethnobotanical records, Oldenlandia is listed among herbs used to "support the lungs" or treat "consumptive diseases," a term historically used for TB. However, scientific evidence supporting the specific use of Oldenlandia for tuberculosis is limited. While some in vitro and animal studies have indicated that extracts from Oldenlandia diffusa possess antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, direct studies against Mycobacterium tuberculosis are rare and generally preliminary. Most of the available research focuses on other pharmacological effects, such as anticancer or general antibacterial activity, rather than anti-tubercular efficacy. In summary, the use of Oldenlandia for tuberculosis is primarily justified by traditional practices, with only weak supportive evidence from modern scientific studies. Its use should not be considered a substitute for established anti-tubercular therapies, and further research would be required to validate any potential role in tuberculosis management.
