Evidence supporting the use of: Crinum
For the health condition: Ulcerations (external)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Crinum species, particularly Crinum asiaticum and Crinum latifolium, have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and various Southeast Asian healing practices, for treating external ulcerations, wounds, and skin infections. The bulbs and leaves are often made into poultices or pastes and applied directly to ulcerated or inflamed skin. Ethnobotanical reports document this use across India, Sri Lanka, and parts of Southeast Asia. The healing properties are attributed to the presence of alkaloids, saponins, and other phytochemicals believed to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. However, scientific validation of these uses is limited. Some laboratory studies have indicated that Crinum extracts display moderate antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity in vitro, but robust clinical trials or detailed mechanism studies are lacking. Thus, while there is credible traditional precedent for the external use of Crinum in managing ulcerations, scientific backing remains preliminary. The evidence rating reflects the strong traditional basis but limited modern research.
