Evidence supporting the use of: Levant Cotton
For the health condition: Ulcerations (external)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Levant Cotton (Gossypium herbaceum) has been used traditionally in various cultures for external applications, particularly as a mechanical dressing for wounds and ulcerations. Historically, the cotton fibers were applied to ulcers and other external lesions to help absorb exudate, protect the wound from contaminants, and facilitate healing by maintaining a clean environment. This use is primarily based on the physical properties of cotton rather than any inherent pharmacological activity of the plant itself. There is limited documentation in historical medical texts and pharmacopeias referencing Levant Cotton as a wound dressing material, particularly before the widespread industrial processing of cotton. However, there is no substantial scientific validation or modern clinical evidence to suggest that Levant Cotton possesses any unique medicinal properties for treating ulcerations beyond its absorbent and protective qualities as a textile. Today, purified cotton and modern dressings are preferred due to their sterility and safety profiles. Therefore, while the use of Levant Cotton for ulcerations is rooted in tradition, the evidence supporting its efficacy is weak and does not extend beyond its historical role as a wound covering.
