Alginic acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide derived from brown seaweed. It is widely used in pharmaceutical formulations, especially for the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and, to a lesser extent, for peptic ulcers. The mechanism of action involves alginic acid reacting with gastric acid to form a viscous gel or "raft" that floats on the surface of the stomach contents. This gel barrier helps to physically protect the esophageal and gastric mucosa from the corrosive effects of stomach acid and pepsin, thereby providing symptomatic relief and potentially supporting mucosal healing.

Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have demonstrated the efficacy of alginate-based formulations (often combined with antacids) in reducing reflux symptoms and improving mucosal protection. However, the bulk of research focuses on GERD rather than peptic ulcers. There is limited but supportive evidence that alginic acid may aid in ulcer management by forming a protective layer over the ulcer site, thus reducing pain and promoting healing. The European Medicines Agency and other regulatory bodies recognize alginic acid as a safe and effective adjunct in the symptomatic treatment of acid-related disorders, though not as a primary ulcer-healing agent.
